Super Bowl Sunday and Retirement

I went to this blogsite and realized that I have not entered anything in a heck of a long time. Well, retirement continues to be great and I cannot emphasize that enough! My mantra still is ‘RETIRE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. YOU ARE NOT INDESPENSIBLE TO YOUR ORGANIZATION."

The weather here in the Washington DC area has been amazing for winter. I have played golf a few times in January with my buddy, Chuckles, who retired from the Government Salamander Administration on January 3. He had been thinking of retirement ever since I retired and told him of the virtues of doing whatever you want and when you want to do it. Chuckles had thought that retirement would be hard to do financially but did all the number crunching and found out that there is basically no difference when you figure in the costs of transportation, business clothing, meals, and the frustration of commuting to a job every day.

I have worked a couple of consulting contract jobs since my retirement. The most recent was with the DC Government. It was a great contract. The pay was excellent; the client was very friendly and accommodating; and I was able to work from my home office most of the time. I have had other consulting offers recently but have turned them down due to the fact that they required on-site work and a 6-month to one-year commitment. Hey, I am RETIRED and do not need to work at all and will work only on my terms. Sound selfish? Who cares is my answer. If I needed work, I would feel different and be kowtowing to the consulting firms. I planned my retirement extremely well – both financially and personally – and now I do what I want and when I want to do it.

My next project is to go on a nice vacation with my wonderful wife, Mrs. Ex-Fed. I am thinking of a cruise or an all-inclusive Caribbean resort for a week. This would not replace her "dream vacation". She still is entitled to her dream vacation for all the wonderful care she took of my mother in her last months. I can never repay my wife for her kindness during that time. Mrs. Ex-Fed seems to be leaning toward a trip to Australia. I am not too keen on that idea but maybe I can talk her out of it by pointing out that the 10 most dangerous snakes in the world are in Australia – as well as the blue-ringed octopus and the saltwater crocodiles. I have learned something from watching Animal Planet!

That is about all the time I have right now to write. I have to go to the food store and get a few supplies to watch the Super Bowl in proper fashion. That means, of course, beer, tortilla chips, and half-smokes. My heart is rooting for the Seahawks only because they stomped the Redskins and got them out of the playoffs.

Once again, RETIRE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. WORK IS OVER-RATED!!!
