Palm Beach Break

Even retirement deserves a vacation. Wow, now that is a statement!

Mrs. Ex-Fed and I decided to take a short break from our days of relaxing around the Washington, DC area and relax in Palm Beach for about 10 days. We have a timeshare at the Marriott in Palm Beach that we purchased a couple of years ago and even though I am not entirely sold on the idea of timeshares, it does provide a great place to visit.

The Marriott is a first class property located right on the Atlantic Ocean and the water is absolutely clear - sort of like in the Caribbean. It is quite a bit cooler, though. We had a 1 bedroom unit which had living room/dining room, kitchen, master bedroom, large bathroom, and a balcony.

Mrs. Ex-Fed said she wanted to go fishing on a head boat on the first full day there. There were about 30 people on the Blue Heron and the water had about 4 foot swells on it to make for an interesting ride. The fishing was not super but we did catch grouper, snapper, and triggerfish. The crew of the Blue Heron filleted the fish for us and we had enough fresh fish for 3 delicious meals. Mrs. Ex-Fed sure knows how to fry fish!

Most of the time, we just relaxed on the beach or around the swimming pools at the resort. I had heard that the hurricanes had eroded many of the Florida beaches and this was true also in Palm Beach. The beach sloped a lot steeper than before the hurricanes and this presented a little worry about rip currents. We just were a bit more cautious this time and these presented no problems. Another resort condo about a mile up the beach from the Marriott sustained massive damage in the hurricanes and will be closed for repair for a year or two. We saw minor damage to some places and some trees were blown over and uprooted in places. Luckily, most of the Palm Beach area did not suffer much damage - from what we saw.

Well, it was great fun to be there in the 80 degree Florida sun and the 10 days were up all too soon and we had to fly back to BWI. I commented to Mrs. Ex-Fed that we now had to get back to the job of being retired. I know that I am rubbing it in for all you working stiffs but I cannot help it. RETIREMENT IS GREAT! DO IT AS SOON AS YOU CAN AND ENJOY LIFE AFTER WORK!
