Heat, Humidity, and Retirements

The first real heat of a Washington DC summer has been on this past week. Temperatures have been in the low 90’s with just about equal humidity. Very uncomfortable to walk around outside and feels really good to stay inside the air-conditioned house and drink the sparkling lemonade. I remember 2 summers ago when I was working (!) downtown and had to commute in the sweltering heat. There is nothing like RETIREMENT to make you feel good about the lousy commutes of previous days.

I know that some of you will find that I have a little mean streak when I say that I enjoy looking at the early morning news and hearing the television anchors saying there are massive back-ups on the Beltway in all directions and that the 270 spur is backed up all the way to Gaithersburg. I get a huge grin on my face, have a second cup of coffee, and leisurely continue reading the Metro section of the Washington Post.

There were some recent retirements at the old Agency. Jimbo decided to retire and gave a one-week notice. Marsha retired from Staffing Division and gave a two-week notice. Both will be missed as they each had around 32 years of government service. This incorporates a huge amount of agency knowledge and cannot be filled by merely selecting another person for their positions. Sure, other employees will do the work and if not, it was not important work in the first place.

I know that both Marsha and Jimbo will find that retirement is a wonderful invention. The best of everything to the both of you!
